Regional Traffic Management Explorer

The Regional Traffic Management (RTM) 'Explorer' is an expert system developed to assist local authorities and network managers to achieve their policy objectives through a coordinated set of control measures. Developed by the Dutch Ministry of Transport (AVV), the Explorer is a Plug-In for OmniTRANS, that follows the principles of the Dutch Traffic Management Architecture (TMA).

Regional Traffic Management Exlorer plug-in

It allows stakeholders to define their desired outcomes (eg. reduced traffic noise, improved safety, reduced delays),for specific roads, areas, or OD ensembles, and advises on the most effective control measures that could be applied to achieve them.

With a library of traffic management controls including ramp metering, tidal flow lanes, speed restrictions, route advice, and access restrictions, the RTM Explorer may be used to visualise the effects of a traffic management strategy and its ability to satisfy the objectives of each stakeholder.

The Plug-In makes use of an extended set of network and control measures in OmniTRANS, together with an expert system that guides the analyst through each step of the process, outlined in detail in the Handbook for Sustainable Traffic Management.

The scope of influence and effectiveness of each control measure has been determined from practice, but these parameters can be amended by the user. This makes the RTM Explorer ideal for use in a workshop to encourage ownership of the objectives and cooperation between the stakeholders.
